5 skills every dancer should develop before turning 15
Do you dream of being a great dancer? Or are you already in it and want to keep growing? The years before 15 are a key stage to develop technique, confidence and expression, three pillars that will mark your evolution in dance. It’s the perfect time to build a solid foundation, understand your body and start defining your own style.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about building a solid foundation: technique that supports any style, mentality that withstands the challenges of the stage and expression that connects with the audience.
These are 5 essential skills you should work on, along with practical tips to integrate them into your day to day.
1. Understand the importance of technique
Without technique, even the most beautiful movement loses strength.
The good news: it is built little by little, with practice and attention.
What can you do?
- Focus on alignment: check your posture (shoulders relaxed, back active, knees aligned).
- Repeat the basics: plies, stretches, jumps… they are the basis of everything.
- Work flexibility and strength: stretch regularly and strengthen feet and legs with body work classes.
Extra tip:
Record yourself dancing from time to time. Seeing your progress is also part of learning.
In well-structured classes, such as Slam Dancing Barcelona, the technique is worked on in a progressive and dynamic way.

2. Mentality: learning to overcome the “no puedo”
Dance is not only physical. Your mentality influences how you move forward and how you face challenges.
What can you do?
- Change “I can’t” to “I’ll try”.
- Practice constancy, even on days with less motivation.
- Learn to manage your nerves before acting.
Extra tip:
Create a little ritual before dancing or going on stage. Something to help you concentrate and trust.
In intensives and workshops, such as the Spring Intensives, this mental work is reinforced in a motivating and team environment.

3. Expression: dance with emotion
Technique is important, but what connects with the public is how you express yourself. Let your personality shine!
What can you do?
- Improvise: Play music and dance without thinking. Discover which movements make you feel free.
- Connect with the music: Close your eyes and feel the rhythm. What does it convey to you? Joy, sadness, energy? Express it!
- Work on the interpretation: If you dance a choreography with history, imagine that you were the character. How would I walk? How would he breathe?
Extra tip:
Choose a song that inspires you and create a small choreography. No pressure, just to explore.
In contemporary dance or musical theater classes, you learn to tell stories with your body and let your creativity flow.

4. Stage experience: lose your fear in the stage
The setting is imposing, but it is also where everything makes sense. The more the
you experiment, the more natural it becomes.
What can you do?
- Take advantage of every opportunity: Even if it is a small event in your school, participate! It will get easier every day.
- Work as a team: If you dance in a group, support your partners. Positive energy is contagious.
- Enjoy the moment: If you make a mistake, keep going. The public notices your passion, not your mistakes.
Extra tip:
Before performing, visualize your choreography in your mind, step by step. You will see how everything flows better!
In schools like Slam Dancing Barcelona, there are samples and productions throughout the year so that you gain experience and confidence.

5. Versatility: explore different styles
Trying different disciplines and tipos de danza makes you grow as a dancer and helps you find what you really like.
What can you do?
- Try at least 3 different styles: Ballet for elegance, contemporary
