Hip hop, Commercial and Dancehall
Hip-hop refers to Urban Dance styles performed primarily with hip hop music. It’s a fusion of different Dance styles and is especially influenced by African Dance. It incorporates large movements such as bouncing and sliding contrasted by intricate sharp movements.
Within Hip-hop, there are different styles:
Commercial refers to styles of choreography created for pop artists that are often promoted through television commercials and videos, and could be defined as a mixture of any dance style where the focus is the attitude of the protagonists.
Commercial Dance gets its name from being the style of dance most often used in today’s international videos and shows, aka “commercial work.”
Dancehall is characterized by being a very sensual dance, with clear references to African and Caribbean dance, while also mixed with energetic Hip-Hop movements.
Whacking is all about striking rapid arm and hand movements that are coordinated to the rhythm of the music and ultimately create poses out of different shapes and positions, especially above and around the head.
